How to kill the echo in your room without buying anything

Two different problems sound the same, and only one of them is the room.

You can hear an empty room. Somebody connects, says hello, and the word arrives with a small hollow tail on it, as though they were talking to you from halfway up a stairwell. It is never dramatic. It just makes every sentence very slightly harder to catch, and ten minutes of very slightly harder is enough to make people tired without knowing what tired them.

Before spending anything, work out which of two problems you have, because they sound similar and share no cause. The first is feedback: your speakers play the other person, your microphone picks that up, and they hear themselves half a second late. That one is theirs — they hear it, you generally do not. The second is reverb: your own voice bouncing off hard surfaces and reaching the microphone several times over. That one is yours, and the people you talk to tend to hear it while you do not, because your ears have been quietly subtracting your own room your entire life.

Feedback has one reliable fix and it is free. Headphones. Any headphones. The second your speakers stop feeding your microphone the loop is broken, and it is one of the few fixes that removes a problem outright rather than reducing it. If a stranger tells you they can hear themselves, that is the whole answer, and it takes about four seconds to apply.

Reverb takes a different approach. Sit where you normally sit and clap once, hard. If the clap stops dead, you are fine and you can stop reading. If there is a short ringing tail on the end of it, you have a live room — and if you clap a few times you can usually hear which direction it is coming back from. Bare walls, a bare floor, a big window, a flat desk and a flat ceiling are the usual culprits, and a room that sounds bad tends to have several of the five.

The first fix costs nothing and beats everything else: get closer to the microphone. Reverb is a ratio rather than an amount. The further your mouth is from the mic, the more of what it hears is bounce instead of voice, and the further away you sit the worse that ratio gets. A laptop shoved to the back of the desk is close to the worst case. Dragging it thirty centimetres nearer changes the sound audibly. A cheap wired headset with the microphone sitting near your mouth wins this outright, which is why a twenty-dollar headset often sounds cleaner than a much better microphone parked at arm's length in the same untreated room.

After that, add soft, thick things, and put them where they count. The wall behind your camera matters most, because that is the direction your voice travels and comes straight back from. A duvet, a heavy coat, a folded blanket over the back of a chair, a wardrobe left open with clothes in it — most of them will do more than the thin foam tiles people tend to buy first. Foam that thin only absorbs the highest frequencies, which is exactly why rooms treated with it still sound boxy and the owner cannot understand why.

If you want an order to work in: curtains across the window, a rug on a hard floor, a full bookshelf on the wall you face, laundry left in the room on purpose the night you know you will be calling. Every one of those is a thing most people already own. A bedroom that already has a bed, curtains and a rug in it is far less likely to ring than an empty kitchen, which is roughly why bedrooms sound better than kitchens and kitchens sound better than empty offices.

Position does some work too. Facing something soft is better than facing a bare wall. Sitting dead centre in a square room is the worst spot available, and shifting a metre off-centre helps more than it has any right to. If there is a corner with things piled in it, sit facing the pile.

Two things are not worth your time. Egg cartons do very little — the shape is right, the material is wrong, and the idea has not held up when people have tested it. And software noise suppression is not an echo fix. It is built to strip steady background noise like a fan, and pointed at reverb it tends to chew the front off your words instead. If your voice sounds like it is being switched on and off mid-sentence, turn that setting down and fix the room instead.

The reasoning travels once you have it. It explains why a call from inside a car sounds fine and a call from a stairwell does not, and why a call from a train fails for reasons that have nothing to do with any of it. Different problem, different fix, and worth telling apart before you spend money on the wrong one.

The reason to bother is the same reason people fix the reflection sitting on their glasses. Nobody on a random call is going to tell you that your room is echoing. They just find you a little harder to follow, and a conversation that is a little harder to follow ends earlier than one that is not. Clap once. If it rings, go and get a blanket.
