What actually happens when you try to video chat on a train
The failure pattern is predictable enough to plan around.
People try it constantly and you can spot it within seconds. The picture is fine, then it is a slideshow, then the voice keeps going while the face stays frozen mid-blink, then everything recovers and the cycle starts again. Somewhere behind their head a field is going past the window at speed, and that is most of the explanation.
A moving train is a hard problem for a phone. Your connection lives on one mast at a time, and when you leave its range the phone hands you to the next one. Standing still, that happens rarely. At speed it happens relentlessly, and every handover is a short gap where packets stop arriving. Video is about the least forgiving thing you can push through those gaps, because it needs a steady stream to stay in sync. Audio shrugs off a stutter. A picture does not.
The carriage works against you as well. Modern trains are metal tubes with coated glass, and both of those take a bite out of the signal before it ever reaches your hand. Seats near the doors and the vestibules tend to do slightly better than the middle of a carriage. Cuttings and tunnels are close to absolute — unless equipment has been installed inside them, nothing gets through rock — so a route with a lot of tunnels is usually a route with a lot of dropped calls, regardless of how many bars you had on the platform.
Onboard wifi feels like it ought to be the answer and usually is not. Most of it is fed by the same mobile network you are already sitting on, shared between a few hundred passengers, and several operators put limits on heavy streaming in their onboard terms so that the shared link survives the carriage. Where the link comes off a satellite instead, the latency alone makes conversation awkward — you get that half-second of overlap where you both start talking and both stop. Testing both and using whichever is better on that particular route beats assuming either.
Underground is a different question with a shorter answer. Some cities have full tunnel coverage and it works about as well as anywhere else. Many have coverage only at stations, which gives you thirty seconds of conversation on the platform and then nothing until the next stop — enough to be rude to whoever you matched with and not enough to say anything. If your metro is the station-only kind, the honest answer is to wait until you are above ground.
If you are doing it anyway, plan around audio. Most platforms drop resolution before they drop the call, so expect a soft, blocky picture and treat the whole thing as a phone call with a face attached. Keep it short. A ten-minute conversation on a moving train will be interrupted several times, and interruptions cost more with a stranger than with a friend, because there is no shared context to pick the thread back up from. Short and cheerful survives. Long and involved does not.
Two practical things people learn the hard way. Sustained video on a phone that is also hunting for masts gets hot and drains fast, and a warm carriage plus half an hour of calling takes a real bite out of a battery you were relying on for the rest of the journey. And a phone held up in one hand for that long is unpleasant in a way you do not notice until minute eight — a bag on your lap makes a far better stand than your arm does.
Then there is the part that has nothing to do with signal. You are in public, and so is everybody behind you. Whoever you match with can see your carriage, and the passengers in it did not agree to appear on camera in front of a stranger. In some countries that is merely rude, in others somebody will tell you so, and being told so on a crowded train is its own kind of journey. Headphones are not optional either — nobody within four rows wants half of a conversation with a stranger — and quiet coaches mean precisely what they say on the sign.
In practice that means a window seat with your back to the aisle, headphones with an inline microphone, and the camera angled so the frame is mostly you and the window rather than the row behind you. It also means accepting that you will be talking quietly, which quietly changes what kind of conversation is available. Loud, high-energy calls do not work on a train. Slow ones do, and a slow one at a window with countryside going past is a genuinely good setting for a conversation, if the connection cooperates.
The verdict, after watching a lot of these fail: between cities on a fast train it works in bursts, provided you go in expecting audio first and a picture that comes and goes. Underground, mostly not. Sitting still on a platform or in a station hall, better than either. And if it is the connection letting you down rather than the space you are in, the fixes are completely different from the ones that rescue a bad-sounding room — worth telling apart before you blame the wrong thing.
